D.O.R.M. International magazine offers a comprehensive internship program for college and graduate students. (We are unable to accept interns who have already completed undergrad unless they are currently enrolled in graduate school.) Internships require approximately fifteen hours of work per week; these hours may be distributed across days of the intern’s choosing, and all internship opportunties at this time are 70-80% virtual positions with 20%-30% providing services and events that we are covering or sponsoring. Positions are unpaid but offer invaluable experience in all aspects of magazine journalism. Purpose: The intent of our program is to give students a taste of online magazine life. D.O.R.M. International Magazine has year-round openings for creative, highly motivated digital interns to handle a broad range of duties. An ideal candidate for this part-time position will have strong writing skills, a dedication to fact checking, and the ability to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines. Primary responsibilities include fact-checking, story pitching, reporting, researching, writing, and updating the website. This internship is unpaid, but you will have bylines and work featured in D.O.R.M. International Magazine (printed and digital), you will attend editorial and digital staff meetings, you will also gain access to events, make great connections with some of the industries finest and more. Previous experience working at a magazine or other editorial publication, online or otherwise, is a plus. All interns must have access to a computer and internet because most work will be completed virtually. Applicants must select one of the following areas of focus, plus one optional backup: EDITORIAL Digital focus: Interns will gain hands-on experience producing content for the digital and the magazine’s tablet edition. Responsibilities include uploading stories from the magazine, building email newsletters, and pitching and writing blog posts. Candidates should exhibit strong writing skills and a basic knowledge of HTML; courses in digital journalism a plus. Intern Positions: Journalist/Writers (Conduct interviews, essays, features and how-to) , Editors /Proofreaders, Web Designer (Html, WordPress, Dreamweaver, Joomla), Manuscript Editor and Proofing (Edit book manuscripts and magazine articles) ART Photography focus: We are looking for a student who is comfortable handling photography equipment and lighting, well-versed in Adobe Photoshop, and familiar with stock photo agencies. Responsibilities include organizing issue artwork, scouting and researching, and assisting on photo shoots. Interns will also undertake photography assignments, skills permitting. Candidates should be organized, deadline-driven, and effective in communicating over the phone, in person, or via email. Intern Posisitons: Graphic Designer (catalog, flyers, magazine design, bookmarks), Photography, Video Production MARKETING Marketing focus: Interns have the opportunity to learn the many different facets of magazine publishing, including production, sales, marketing, public relations, event and database development, accounting, and business planning. They assist in creating and executing communications and marketing strategies, researching and coordinating mailings, updating website listings, and coordinating special events.
